Hiking Southern Spain

What hiking opportunities are there in southern Spain?

Walking in Andalusia is great! An individual walking holiday is very possible , we are happy to help you with the content of this. You will find some of the most beautiful walking areas of Spain in our area. It is very diverse and for every level.

There are the boulevards along the coast, here you can walk for miles and it is over

Generally all flat so for many people these walks are doable.

The nice thing about walking here is that you walk mostly along the sea, which is always a

beautiful view and usually brings a cooling breeze. Also come

You will come across plenty of restaurants and bars along the way where you can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink.

drink. Bringing your own food and drinks is therefore not necessary.

There are also beautiful walks in the mountains. There are different levels to be found here, some condition is required here. However, you get a lot in return, the nature is fantastic and the views are beautiful. Usually you will find peace on these walks and you will meet few other people. We should not forget the challenge of reaching a mountain top, that is great and feels like a victory for many.

In the mountains you mainly walk through nature, so don't forget to bring food and drinks and enjoy a picnic with panoramic views. If you come across a village along the way, there is of course always the possibility to eat something. On these trips you generally end up in the real Spain. Small white villages stuck to the mountain, orchards with olive trees, people who still use donkeys and usually greet you friendly.

When to go on a walking holiday in Andalusia?

The weather in Andalusia is generally sunny all year round. This is great weather for a walk, although it can be very hot in high season, especially in the mountains. Then there is of course the possibility to go for a walk early in the morning or in the evening, but then you will not get to the long walks. The ideal time to come for a walk is from October to April.

Markings of hiking trails in Spain

  • Longer distances are Grandes Recorridos, or GRs. These are red/white. Minimum distance: 50 kilometers, for advanced riders!

  • Shorter distances are called pequeños Recorridos, or PRs. These are yellow/white and are simply day trips.

  • Other types of hiking trails in Spain may of course have different colours.

October/November

Autumn (October/November) also often gives nice weather. The days start to get shorter and the nights get a bit colder. Everywhere you can still find figs, almonds and grapes in the countryside. The coast becomes quieter again which also makes walking more pleasant.

In October there is the Marbella four-day event, this is the sister of the Nijmegen four-day event and is organized by Dutch people. The distances are ten, twenty or thirty kilometers. The routes run through different parts of Marbella, through the city, nature and along the beach. It is also possible to walk less than four days. Afterwards there is live music and fun at Plaza del Mar.

December, January, February

The months of December, January and February generally have many hours of sunshine.

During the day it often gets to twenty degrees and the evening temperature

can sometimes drop to a minimum of eight degrees, which are pleasant walking temperatures.

In winter the sun rises around half past seven and sets around half past six, these are

good days to make beautiful trips. A real recommendation is to go from mid-January

until mid-February. In our mountains the almond trees are in bloom then, which makes the whole valley light pink.

March/ April

Spring is a good time to go hiking everywhere and Andalusia is no different. The temperatures are not very high yet but the sun is already shining brightly. Now is the time when the mountains are full of wild flowers and everything is still green. The almond trees have leaves again and the olives are like little balls in the trees. The birds are whistling and are busy making their nests. The days are getting longer again which means that you have more hours to make beautiful trips. The sea is getting warmer again so after a walk along the boulevards it is nice to take a dip. It is already a bit busier on the coast, but that also brings coziness with it.
